Fairy Music, Will’s Plea, and the Wayward Pool
Session 3.1 began outside Nib’s cave. The party decided to visit Juniper, the olwbear Zahala befriended in Session 2.5. After Zahala deftly reharnessed her, Juniper served as the party’s mount.
As they journeyed through the fantastical realm of Prismeer, the party happened upon a rotting old oak tree, where they encountered three fairies. The fairies told the party that they had polymorphically transformed some nasty redcaps into goats, and they showed them the redcaps’ sickles. When the party picked up the sickles, the goats attacked! However, as soon as the party dropped the sickles, the goats stopped fighting.
The party tied the goats to the back of the carriage and moved them away from the tree to help the fairies. Once they were a safe distance away, they released the goats, who immediately ran off into the woods.
Continuing on their journey, the party came across a fairy ring where a group of Campestris—small mushrooms—were dancing and singing. Zahala and Acornagorn, eager to join in the merriment, entered the fairy ring and began playing their flutes. Filbert, more cautious, chose to remain outside the circle. Zahala and Acornagorn played so beautifully that they were granted true sight. Impressed by their performance and recognizing the song they played, the Campestris bestowed upon Zahala a charm of heroism.
The party eventually arrived at the tree where they had met Will in Session 3.0. After a bit of persuading from Filbert, Will and his companions—Bobi (a dwarf), Sloane (a ginger elf), and Zennor (a female orc)—welcomed them into their treetop home, which was filled with cozy pillows and blankets. There, the party discovered that their new friends shared their home with a displacer kitten named Star.
Will and his friends asked the party for help rescuing some other children who were being held captive by a witch in Loomlurch, promising to reward the party with a favor in return. The children suggested the party visit the Wayward Pool for advice on how to proceed, suggesting they disguise themselves as unicorns.
Acornagorn used his skills to fashion some convincing-looking unicorn horns for the party. Juniper, however, was not a fan of the fake horn. Undeterred, Filbert repeatedly cast minor illusion to create a fake horn for Juniper, successfully concealing her true identity.
When they arrived at the Wayward Pool, the party discovered a misty lake with an island in the middle. Filbert used misty step to reach the island and then cast prestidigitation to light a fire, summoning Lamorna, the unicorn, who spoke to the party telepathically.
Lamorna told the party that Prismeer was once ruled by the archfey Zybilna, but it was usurped by the evil hags of the Hourglass Coven: Skabatha Nightshade, Bavlorna Blightstraw, and Endelyn Moongrave. Lamorna went on to explain that, while Zybilna could be vainglorious and deceitful, her magic kept Prismeer safe. That all changed when the Hourglass Coven captured Elidon, Lamorna’s mate, and stole his horn. They then used the horn’s magic to imprison Zybilna in her stronghold, the Palace of Heart’s Desire.
Lamorna revealed that Elidon’s horn might be the key to freeing Zybilna. Unfortunately, she didn’t know where to find it or Elidon, though she believed that Elidon was still alive and being held prisoner.
Lamorna told the party that Amidor the dandelion, a denizen of Yon, could lead them safely to the Palace of Heart’s Desire. She warned them that no one could enter the Palace without an invitation when Zybilna ruled Prismeer, but she wasn’t sure if the Hourglass Coven possessed the power to enforce those restrictions.
Finally, Lamorna warned the party about the jabberwock: a fearsome, dragon-like creature that prowled the forest surrounding Zybilna’s palace. Although the jabberwock was unable to reach the Wayward Pool—the lake’s magic prevented it—it was a relentless hunter that rarely gave up once it had set its sights on its prey, and she urged the party to avoid it at all costs.
As Lamorna finished sharing this information, an assassin suddenly appeared and attacked! The assassin attacked Lamorna with his daggers, striking her twice.
The party sprang into action to defend Lamorna, who used her magic to teleport away before the assassin could strike her again. The assassin was clearly losing the fight. Frustrated, the assassin threw down his weapons and surrendered.
Zahala tried to charm the assassin but was unsuccessful. Acornagorn then stabbed the assassin with his dagger. When he moved to stab the assassin a second time, Filbert intervened, stopping Acornagorn with an opposed athletics roll. They then tied the assassin up, took his weapons, and brought him back to the treehouse.
Back at the treehouse, Will tried unsuccessfully to charm the assassin. Little Oak, the treehouse, then took the assassin and wrapped his giant hand around the assassin, creating a cage to hold him.
Before going to sleep, Acornagorn met Squirt, a talking oilcan, who claimed to know the way to Yon and offered to help the party in exchange for some boggle oil. Acornagorn placed Squirt in his pack and settled down for the night.
The following morning, Zahala told Will about Star’s mother, Dirlagraun. Will agreed that, after they rescued the children from Loomlurch, they would try to reunite Star with its mother.
Will drew a map of Loomlurch in the dirt and began explaining his plan for saving the children. Meanwhile, all the party members leveled up to level 5.
- You started outside of Nib’s cave
- You decided to go visit Juniper again, where Zahala deftly reharnessed her and you gained a mount to help save time on your journeys.
- You found yourselves at a rotting old oak, where three fairies told you they polymorphed some nasty redcaps into goats. You picked up their sickles and they attacked you, but upon dropping them they stopped.
- You tied them to the back of the carriage and took them away from the tree to help the fairies out. You released them before they transformed back into redcaps and they went running off into the woods.
- You discovered a fairy ring where some Campestris were dancing and singing. Zahala and Acornagorn joined into the dance, playing their flutes, and Filbert stayed outside of the circle. Zahala and Acornagorn gained true sight after performing beautifully, and when the Campestris learned the song you were playing, they gave Zahala a charm of heroism.
- You found your way to the tree, where a quick speech from Filbert and a successful persuasion check convinced Will and his companions Bobi (dwarf), Sloane (ginger elf), and Zennor (female orc) greeted you in their treehouse filled with pillows and blankets.
- You discovered that they have a displacer kitten named Star.
- You agreed to help them raid Loomlurch to rescue some children, and the three other children convinced you to go visit the Wayward Pool first, with some advice about how to do it (disguise yourself as a unicorn).
- Acornagorn fashioned some beautiful fake unicorn horns for you, and though Juniper didn’t want to wear a fake unicorn horn, Filbert cast minor illusion again and again to create a fake unicorn horn for her, getting you to the lakeshore.
- A misty lake, an island in the middle of it.
- Filbert misty stepped to the island and used prestidigitation to start the fire, and Lamorna appeared. She telepathically told you:
- The domain of Prismeer once belonged to the archfey Zybilna, but was usurped by her cruel hag stepsisters: Skabatha Nightshade, Bavlorna Blightstraw, and Endelyn Moongrave.
- Zybilna was vainglorious and deceitful at times, but her magic kept Prismeer safe and isolated. That situation ended when the hags of the Hourglass Coven captured Lamorna’s mate, Elidon; stole his horn; and used its magic to imprison Zybilna in her stronghold, the Palace of Heart’s Desire.
- Elidon’s horn might be needed to free Zybilna, but Lamorna doesn’t know the whereabouts of Elidon or his horn. She tells the characters that she believes Elidon is the hags’ prisoner. (If Elidon had died, Lamorna believes she would’ve sensed it.)
- She tells them that one of Yon’s denizens, Amidor the dandelion, can lead the group safely to the Palace of Heart’s Desire.
- When Zybilna ruled Prismeer, no one could enter her palace without an invitation. It’s unlikely that the Hourglass Coven is capable of enforcing similar restrictions on the palace.
- A library on the second floor of the palace contains Zybilna’s most treasured tomes.
- A dragon-like creature called a jabberwock lives in Zybilna’s palace and frequently prowls the forest. The jabberwock tries to reach Wayward Pool but is always turned away by the lake’s protective magic. Lamorna emphasizes that the characters would be wise to avoid the jabberwock, for once it sets its fiery eyes on prey, it rarely gives up the hunt.
- Upon finishing providing you this information, an assassin appeared and he took two big, quite successful dagger swiped at Lamorna, hurting her.
- After rolling initiative, he went again, but he was not able to garotte her.
- You fought him vailiantly, hurting him quite a bit.
- On her turn, Lamorna teleported away.
- Zarek was angry about this, and also losing, so he threw down his weapons and gave up.
- Zahala tried to charm him, unsuccessfully.
- Acornagorn stabbed him with his dagger.
- Acornagorn went to stab him a second time and Filbert stopped him with an opposed athletics roll.
- You tied him up and took his weapons and took him back to the tree house, where Will tried to charm him again, unsuccessfully, and then Little Oak took him and wrapped him up in a cage made of one of his hands.
- Before going got sleep, Acornagorn met Squirt, and oilcan who knows the way to Yon and who is willing to help but he needs some boggle oil. Acornagorn put Squirt in his pack.
- After a long rest, Zahala told Will about Star and Dirlagraun, and Will agreed to try to get Star back to its mother after the children are rescued.
- Will scratched a map of Loomlurch in the dirt and he is getting ready to tell you his plan for saving the children there.
- All of you leveled up to Level 5.
