Session 3.5

A Frog’s Mouth & Traveling to Yon

Session 3.5 began in Bavlorna’s attic, where the party was deciding what to do with the objects they had found after defeating Bavlorna in battle. They decided to tie the mannequin wearing the Helm of Telepathy to the large metal frog in the corner. As they moved the mannequin, Acornagorn slipped, and his arm went into the frog’s mouth. When he removed his hand, it was holding poop. Filbert then put his hand in the frog’s mouth and yelled, “beet salad,” but nothing happened.

The party then returned Clapperclaw’s skull to him. Clapperclaw, grateful to have his skull back, led the party back to Thither. Once in Thither, Filbert tried to convince Elkhorn to abandon the children and help them, but Elkhorn refused, reminding Filbert that the children called him “mom.” Elkhorn then slapped Filbert on the back jovially, causing him damage.

Meanwhile, Zahala checked in with Will, who had not found the unicorn horn. The group then decided to follow Squirt to Yon, where Filbert believed his lost feather was located.

As they traveled through a pass in Yon, the group saw two people standing on a ledge: a 3-foot-tall dandelion with a rapier and an elf with a moon mask. An orange-sized bumblebee was also flying around them. The elf saw the party, pointed at them, and the dandelion drew his sword. Filbert tried to use the marionette to control the elf, but it didn’t work. The elf asked the party why they had a marionette of her and her sister. The party played a song to accompany Filbert as he sang about lost sisters. The song soothed the three creatures, who told the party they needed help.

The three creatures introduced themselves as Amidor, Gleam, and Pollenella. Amidor, a dandelion knight, was on the run after freeing Pollenella, a queen bee, from a cyclops beekeeper. Amidor and Pollenella met Gleam, an elf, and Amidor decided to help Gleam after hearing her story. Gleam explained that Endelyn Moongrave had snipped off her shadow with a pair of magic scissors and had imprisoned her twin sister, Glister. The rule of hospitality prevented the hag from harming Glister, but Gleam could sense her distress. Gleam wanted to free Glister and find a way back to the Witchlight Carnival, where the twins had been star performers as an acrobatic duo. Gleam hoped to use the Fey Beacons to get back to the carnival.

Endelyn Moongrave believed that her demise would occur during an eclipse. Since there is no moon in the sky over Yon, Endelyn assumed that the eclipse would be a symbolic display rather than a literal one. Because the Selenelion twins were the living embodiment of the moon and the sun, the hag had decided to separate Gleam and Glister, releasing Gleam while keeping Glister as her “guest.” By keeping the twins apart, the hag hoped to postpone her death.

The party agreed to help Gleam, and she told them that the mountains were home to clans of korreds, stout Fey creatures whose hair had the strength of iron. The korreds gathered and danced at Lockbury Henge. Gleam also told the party that an elf prince named Alagarthas had made a bargain with Endelyn and was now trapped in Yon at the Fey Beacons, searching for a way home. Lastly, Gleam told the party about a bugbear named Hurley who had made a bargain with Endelyn and was unhappy with how things had turned out. Hurley was being forced to perform in Endelyn’s morbid theater. Like Gleam, Hurley had worked for Mister Witch and Mister Light, though Gleam and her sibling had already left the carnival by the time Hurley and his brother Burly had arrived. Gleam knew that Hurley was eager to see his brother again, and she wanted to help him if she could.

The party and their new companions traveled through Yon and came across a throne hewn from the earth. The inscription on the throne read: “I am a traveler from a distant land; My name is Mazikoth, Keeper of Stars; Sit on my throne, disciple, and unravel.” The party tried to remember what they knew about Mazikoth, but only Amidor remembered that he was a renowned astronomer. Filbert and Zahala refused to sit on the throne, but Acornagorn sat on it and fell into a deep sleep for an hour. Acornagorn dreamed about the stars and awoke with a new proficiency: intimidation.

As the party continued their journey, they encountered three goats with yellow eyes. Each goat spoke, saying: “When the moon obstructs the sun, Creeping Lyn will come undone. Play to her passions. Stay on script. A cat, a horn, or a shadow ripped. The fool’s scepter is the key.”

Finally, as the party made their way uphill to the Henge, they encountered a cyclops in beekeeping gear. The cyclops saw Amidor and Pollinella and screamed at them in Giant before running toward them angrily. None of the party members understood Giant. The session ended as the party rolled for initiative.

The party’s motivations in Session 3.5 included: helping Gleam reunite with Glister and escape from Endelyn, potentially helping reunite Hurley and Burly, finding Filbert’s lost item, and finding and rescuing Zybylna.

  • You start in Bavlorna’s attic, having defeated her in battle, where you found a helm of telepathy on a wooden mannequin among some other objects. After some discussion, you decided to tie the mannequin to the large metal frog in the corner.
  • Moving the mannequin to the frog, Acornagorn slipped and his arm went into the frog’s mouth. He swore, and upon removing his hand, had poop in it.
  • Filbert threw his hand in—feeling the grossness of the extradimensional space—and yelled “beet salad,” which had no effect.
  • The group returned Clapperclaw’s skull to him, which he was immensely grateful for, and then asked him to lead them back to Thither.
  • Back in Thither, Filbert again tried to convince Elkhorn to abandon the children to help, but Eklhorn stoutly refused. The children call Elkhorn “mom.” Elkhorn slapped Filbert on the back jovially, doing damage.
  • Zahala checked in with Will, who had not found the unicorn horn.
  • The group allowed Squirt to lead them to Yon, where Filbert felt the deep sense that his lost feather resides. Coming through a pass, the groups saw two people standing on a ledge: a 3-foot-tall dandelion with a rapier and an elf with a moon mask on. There was also an orange-sized bumblebee flying around.
  • The elf saw you and pointed, and the dandelion drew his sword.
  • Filbert tried to use the marionette to perhaps control the elf, to no avail.
  • The elf cried out, “why do you have a marionette of me and my sister?
  • The others played a song to accompany Filbert and he sang a song about lost sisters.
  • The song soothed the three creatures, and they told you they need help.
  • They introduced themselves: Amidor, Gleam, and Pollenella.
    • Amidor is on the run after freeing Pollenella, a queen bee, from a cyclops beekeeper. The two of them crossed paths with Gleam, and, after hearing the elf’s sorry tale, Amidor resolved to help her.
    • Endelyn Moongrave snipped off Gleam’s shadow using a pair of magic scissors and has imprisoned her twin sister, Glister. The rule of hospitality prevents the hag from harming Glister, but Gleam can sense her sister’s distress. The twins work as an acrobatic duo, and they used to be star performers in the Witchlight Carnival. Gleam wants to free her sister and find a way back to the carnival—perhaps with the help of the Fey Beacons.
    • Endelyn believes her own demise will occur during an eclipse. Because there is no moon in the sky over Yon, the hag assumes the eclipse will be a symbolic display, rather than a literal one. Since the Selenelion twins are the living embodiment of the moon and the sun, the hag decided to separate the elf sisters, releasing one while keeping the other as her “guest.” By keeping the twins apart, the hag hopes to forestall her doom.
  • After you agreed to help them, Gleam told you the following:
    • The mountains are home to clans of korreds—stout Fey creatures whose hair has the strength of iron. The korreds gather and dance at Lockbury Henge.
    • An elf prince named Alagarthas made a bargain with Endelyn and now finds himself trapped in Yon. He’s at the Fey Beacons, searching for a way home
    • Hurly, a bugbear, made a bargain with Endelyn and is quite unhappy with how things played out. Now he is forced to perform in her morbid theater. Like Gleam, Hurly used to work for Mister Witch and Mister Light, though Gleam and her sibling had already left the carnival by the time Hurly and his brother Burly arrived. (Gleam knows that Hurly is eager to see his brother again, and she’d like to help him if she can.)
  • You traveled through Yon, discovering a thrown hewn out of the work that said:
    • I am a traveler from a distant land; My name is Mazikoth, Keeper of Stars; Sit on my throne, disciple, and unravel.
    • The group tried to remember what they know about Mazikoth, but only Amidor remembered that he was a renowned astronomer.
    • Filbert and Zahala refused to sit on the throne, but Acornagorn did, falling into a deep sleep for an hour where he dreamed about the stars. When he awoke, he had a new proficiency: in intimidation
  • Further along the journey you encountered three goats, who looked at you with their yellow eyes and each spoke, saying:
    • When the moon obstructs the sun, Creeping Lyn will come undone.
    • Play to her passions. Stay on script. A cat, a horn, or a shadow ripped.
    • The fool’s scepter is the key.
  • And finally, as you were making your way uphill to the Henge, you encountered a cyclops in beekeeping gear, who upon seeing Amidor and Pollinella screamed something in Giant (which none of you understand) and began running at you angrily.
  • We rolled initiative.

You are motivated to:

  • Help Gleam get reunited with her sister (and help her sister escape from Endylyn)
  • Perhaps help Hurly and Burly reunite, as well
  • Find Filbert’s lost item
  • Find and rescue Zybylna
