Whispers of the Mine: A Brigganock’s Bargain
Session 4.2 began with the party, fresh from their encounter with the Korreds, setting out for the Brigganock mine. Guided by the Korreds’ description, they found their way to the mine’s entrance, marked by the strange sight of Korred statues positioned throughout the landscape—some leaning around trees, others peeking up over rocks. The air buzzed with the unmistakable sounds of mining—a discordant symphony of clangs and crashes that hinted at the industrious nature of the creatures within.
The Mine’s Embrace
After a brief exploration of the mine, a strange lethargy overcame all but Acornagorn. One by one, the party members succumbed to a mysterious sleep. Acornagorn, ever vigilant, attempted to rouse Filbert with a bucket of water, even going so far as to move him 15 feet and relieve him of his shoes. Despite his best efforts, his companions remained fast asleep.
Acornagorn’s Vigil and the Brigganocks’ Return
Deciding discretion was the better part of valor, Acornagorn ceased his attempts to awaken the others and instead tried to blend into the shadows of the mine. It wasn’t long before a group of Brigganocks returned, their tiny forms barely visible in the dim light. Intent on incapacitating the intruders, they began tying up the slumbering party members with ropes. However, Acornagorn, still awake and alert, startled the Brigganocks before they could secure him, sending them scurrying back into the darkness.
Once the coast was clear, Acornagorn quickly untied his companions, then, in a move that can only be described as mischievous, used the ropes to truss up Filbert.
A Chance Encounter and a Bargain Struck
As Acornagorn was in the midst of securing Filbert, he heard the sound of someone approaching. Turning, he found Molliver, accompanied by a Brigganock named Trig. A tense conversation ensued, with Acornagorn attempting to explain their presence and Molliver, understandably skeptical, questioning their motives.
Eventually, Molliver persuaded Acornagorn that the safest course of action for the party was to allow themselves to be tied up again by the Brigganocks—a curious turn of events, but one that Acornagorn, perhaps trusting in Molliver’s judgment, agreed to.
Words as Weapons: A War of Words and a Bridge of Peril
Upon waking, a verbal sparring match erupted between Molliver and Filbert. Filbert, never one to mince words, launched into a tirade against Elkhorn, much to Molliver’s displeasure. However, calmer heads prevailed, and a grudging understanding was reached between the two. Molliver, honoring his word, led the party to a secret passage, guiding them towards their goal.
Their path led them to a chasm spanned by a precarious bridge. As they stepped onto the bridge, three menacing Flameskulls materialized, their fiery skulls burning bright in the dim light. Zahala, using her Helm of Telepathy, cast suggestion on one of the Flameskulls, suggesting they be left in peace. Filbert did the same to a second skull.
The remaining Flameskull launched an attack on Zahala.
Acornagorn attempted to repair his broken flute, but to no avail.
Meanwhile, the battle raged on. Zahala and Filbert, their attempts at peaceful negotiation having failed, tried again to convince the Flameskulls to allow them safe passage, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Zahala, resorting to more forceful measures, attempted to cast a fear spell on the middle Flameskull but was met with resistance. Filbert, ever resourceful, used his Misty Step ability to teleport to safety halfway across the bridge. Unsure if he was truly out of harm’s reach, he conjured a magnificent illusion of a giant skull, hoping to intimidate the Flameskulls into leaving the party alone.
A Desperate Flight and an Unexpected Ally
The Flameskulls, their attention now focused on Zahala, pressed their attack, striking her once more and breaking her concentration on her suggestion spell. Acornagorn, seeing his companions in danger, unleashed a volley of arrows at the Flameskulls, striking them several times. Filbert, having reached the safety of the opposite side of the bridge, was greeted by one of the Flameskulls, who, realizing the giant skull was an illusion, commended him on his cleverness.
Zahala, overhearing this exchange, realized that the halfway point of the bridge offered sanctuary from the Flameskulls’ attacks. She too, crossed the threshold, joining Filbert on the other side. Acornagorn, under heavy attack from two Flameskulls, managed to evade their fiery assault and flee to safety. Once he had crossed the halfway point, he managed to negotiate safe passage for the rest of the party.
A Moment of Respite: The Grotto, the Pony, and the Promise of Peace
Their harrowing encounter with the Flameskulls behind them, the party found themselves in a hidden grotto. In the center of the grotto stood a curious sight—a pony with a small house perched precariously on its back. This, they soon discovered, was the dwelling place of Obud, an ancient Brigganock, and his faithful steed, Keg.
Obud, eager to help, offered to reveal the location of a secret tunnel in exchange for the party’s assistance in ending the conflict between the Brigganocks and the Korreds. The party, having already made progress towards this goal through their encounter with Molliver and the Brigganocks, assured Obud that a solution was already underway. Delighted by this news, Obud happily revealed the location of the tunnel—a secret unknown even to Endelyn Moongrave herself. He also shared valuable information about the Fey Beacons, hinting at a powerful magic that could be unleashed when all the beacons were lit.
A Time for Rest and a Glimmer of Hope
With much-needed information in hand and the promise of peace on the horizon, the party settled down for a long rest.
- You started the day at Lockbury Henge, having convinced the Korreds that you are there to help.
- They told you about the Brigganock mine, and about how the Brigganocks are helping Bitter End, who steals their hair and makes trouble.
- You decided to travel to the mine. On the way there, you encountered some goblin shadows which shook fists at you and looked threatening but didn’t do anything else. You ignored them.
- Once there, you discovered the stone Korred statues they told you about, leaning around trees and peeking up over rocks. You could hear the sound of the mine being active.
- You decided to head back to ask the Korreds more questions about the Brigganocks. On the way, a tornado swept up the whole party and Pollenella was killed when you were thrown down by the tornado at Lockbury Henge again.
- Zahala performed a beautiful mournful song to celebrate Pollenella.
- Filbert spoke some pretty good words.
- Acornagorn broke his flute.
- After Amidor mourned the loss of his beloved Pollenella, you asked questions of the Korreds about the Brigganocks, and they described them as small creatures. You traveled back to the mine—on the way encountering goblins with bells who said they could call up the dead to answer three questions. You declined the opportunity to speak with the dead.
- You also saw a puppet show in a weird self-moving theatre of the tornado catching all of you up and throwing you on the henge, and received personalized invitations to meet Endelyn Moongrave at her castle “Good for one private audience with Endelyn Moongrave—no strings attached!” The puppet show and the strange creature traveling with it disappeared in a poof.
- You got back to the mine and upon entering, after 10 minutes or so, everyone except Acornagorn fell fast asleep.
- Acornagorn threw a bucket of water on Filbert to try to wake him, then moved him 15 feet, then took his shoes.
- Then Acornagorn tried lying still. After short while, the Brigganocks returned to tie everyone up, but Acornagorn scared them away before they could tie him up.
- Acornagorn untied everyone and then used all the ropes to tie up Filbert.
- While Acornagorn was tying up Filbert, he heard a man creeping up behind him. Turning around, he discovered Molliver and a Brigganock called Trig. They chatted, with Molliver not really believing everything Acornagorn said.
- Molliver convinced Acornagorn to allow them to tie him and the other party members back up again in order to stay safe.
- Upon waking, Molliver and Filbert jousted with words. Filbert was pretty nasty about Elkhorn, but eventually they understood each other and Molliver told the party he would help them find the secret passage. They all arrived at a chasm and Molliver encouraged them to go across the bridge that spanned it.
- Upon walking across the bridge, three flameskulls appeared, ready to attack the party
- Zahala suggested to one of them with her Helm of Telepathy to leave them alone
- Filbert suggested to another to do the same thing
- The remaining one attacked Zahala
- Acornagorn tried unsuccessfully to repair his flute
- Zahala tried to convince the skulls to let them cross but they were unconvinced
- Filbert tried as well, with the same result
- Zahala tried to cast fear on the middle skull, but it resisted
- Filbert misty-stepped to safety, more than halfway across the bridge, but not knowing that he would be safe there, he minor illusioned a giant skull and tried to convince the flame skulls to leave the party alone. This did not work (though it was rad)
- Zahala got hit again by a skull and lost concentration on her suggestion spell
- Acornagorn hit the skulls with arrows a few times.
- Filbert ran off to the end of the bridge, and one of the flame skulls, realizing it was an illusion, told him “good job on getting across!”
- Zahala heard this and also stepped across the halfway point to safety.
- Acornagorn got attacked by two skulls, with both of them hitting him once successfully, then he also ran to safety, and he finally convinced them to let everyone else pass.
- On the other side of the bridge, you found a grotto with a pony in it. There was a small house on top of the pony, where Obud lives with his pony Keg.
- Obud was willing to trade information about the location of the tunnel for the ending of the quarrel between the Brigganocks and Korreds
- The party informed him that the solution to that problem was already underway, and he delightedly explained that the tunnel, which Endelyn does not know about, is right behind him.
- He also told them that the fey beacons create some kind of powerful magic when they are all lit.
- The characters took a long rest and planned to go back through the mines to help negotiate peace between the Brigganocks & Korreds, and they also hope (according to them) to visit the Fey Beacons
You are motivated to:
- End the quarrel between the Brigganocks and Korreds
- Visit the elf prince at the Fey Beacons
- Help Gleam get reunited with her sister (and help her sister escape from Endylyn)
- Perhaps help Hurly and Burly reunite, as well
- Find Filbert’s lost item
- Find and rescue Zybylna
